Tonight's 30 Days of Dead Shows is the Hurricane that Descended on the Fillmore East on 2-11-70 NY,NY

There's a reason I waited until later to post this show. This is one of the most famous multi-player jams in Dead history. If you've read "Searching for the Sound" by Phil, he spent about three pages talking about this show. Epic doesn't begin to describe it.
After Jerry mentions to Phil that he needs to check out the ABB, they start the show like any other show. First off, there was an early show and a late show. All that exists is "The Other One" and the back half of the "Cryptical Envelopment"  and a couple of warm up tracks. Then the late show begins and the roof of the Fillmore East could barely contain what was about to happen.
The opening "Not Fade Away" is a smoking version that shows the band flexing their muscles. After a quick run through a couple of the new songs off Workingman's Dead, the magic would begin to take hold. Or maybe it was the acid...
Despite some cuts and drop outs, this show is so good I just had to post it. First off, the fireworks start at "Dark Star" when Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac starts the all-star sit-in. Duane Allman joins in on slide during the jam and Arthur Lee from Love jumps up and helps with percussion and Gregg sidles up and sits down at the organ bench. Try to keep count of the players. We are at eleven so far. Just like Arthur Lee, Butch Trucks joins in on the drums. While Mickey is terrorizing his gong, Mick Fleetwood and Danny Kirwan jump on the stage. So at this point coming to the end of "Spanish Jam" going into "Lovelight" there are five guitarists, four drummers, and an organ while Pigpen and Gregg Allman trade vocals on "Lovelight". As a measure of how much musical chaos into coherence is happening, Phil hands his bass over to Berry Oakley just so he can listen. This show, despite all the cuts and splices, is a piece of history. The show isn't even done until daylight and the crowd and the bands stumble out and it's 7:30 in the morning!

For Today's 30 for 30 Grateful Dead Shows, Grateful Music brings you the "Dark Star of "Dark Stars". This show is a classic must-have, 11-11-73.

This show has one of the meatiest, most beautiful and exploratory second half's that includes two of the greatest "Dark Star" and "Eyes of the World" versions ever played. This show is a must-have and is a classic from one of the band's best years.
This show has been one of my favorite shows for a long time. The massive first set is just one reason. Bobby started off sounding a little rough but soon found his footing. The first set is so full of grateful goodness that anything that I say is just wasted breath.
John Scott from Deadbase called this the "thinking man's 'Dark Star'".This is one of the best of 73' and therefore one of the best ever.  The jam goes through so many phases of cosmic interplay to dissonance to smooth spacey goodness that it has to top the chart with any real deadhead. The way it melts into "Eyes of the World" from the MLB jam is magic. The next tune up is Eyes and it is one of the most face-melting Eyes ever played. I will put it up against any Eyes from 77 or any other year. The way it goes through it's changes are simply amazing. Then to follow it up with a heartfelt "China Doll" is just magical.
This show is easily one of my desert island discs and I'm considering 8/17/72,6/16/74, and the 5/7-9/77 run. This also has one of the hottest "China>Rider"'s that I've heard. It was probably the turning point of the show. And I feel like I should send a special shout out to the "EL Paso" that Bobby's voice came back for and Jerry played his heart out on this smoking Texas story. For the encore, it sounds like Jerry was touched by angels as Bobby was trying to say good night, and Jerry broke into "And I Bid You Goodnight" Either way, if I go into each song, we'll be here forever. LISTEN TO THIS SHOW!

Today's Thirty Dead Shows in Thirty Days Takes Us Back to the Wall of Sound and the marathon shows of 1974. Grateful Music Presents 6-18-74, Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY

1974 was a big year for the Grateful Dead in all ways. Following the success of 1973 and using that to build the gigantic Wall of Sound, the Dead played some of their best, and longest, gigs to date. Today we take a look at one of those. It has been released as a Road Trips but with all due respect, they butchered the production on it. Here it is in all it's glory.

One of the best of a wonderful year. 6-18-74 Freedom Hall in Louisville,KY
The whole band was on fire for this excursion near the Mason-Dixon line. With a rare-ish first set "Eyes" that melts into a "China Doll" and a hard rocking "Around and Around", the whole first set is just magic. I'm not going song by song because this is one of those shows that should be listen to as a whole piece of music because each song has a strong showing by everybody.

Like normal, the meat of the show is in the second set. It really kicks off with a "Weather Report Suite" that Jerry slays during the "Let It Grow" segment and after a ten minute jam melts into "The Other One". After going on a psychedelic bus ride for about twenty minutes the band returned to Pigpen territory with an,"It's a Sin" jam that drifts into an absolutely gorgeous "Stella Blue". The band could have stopped right there but they were on a roll and so they finished up with a "TN Jed" and a "Sugar Magnolia". The Sugar Mags was were they said there goodnights but the real end of the show was when they came back out for the encore and tore the proverbial roof off the sucker with an absolutely breathtaking "Morning Dew" that got the rare call in the encore slot. Jerry didn't pull a punch and the band followed suit. This show is one of the highlights of 74' and listen to Phil during the Dew and you'll yearn for the Wall of Sound.

Today's Grateful Music 30 in 30 Grateful Dead show is my birthday show. 5-11-77 in St.Paul,MN and Part of the Classic Spring of 77' Tour

What else is there to be said about Spring of 77'? The Grateful Dead was a band beyond description and quite possibly the best they would ever be to some. This show happened a few days after the famous Barton Hall show. I like to tell people that the bass rumbles from the 5-8-77 finally got to Memphis and pushed my mom into labor.
My beautiful birthday show. Well my mom did all the work, so it's her show really. 5/11/77 St. Paul,MN
This was a Jerry show, straight up. Mic Drop. Still, the show starts out with a smoking "Promised Land", then a nicely-paced, "They Love Each Other". Jerry really sets the place on fire with, "Loser" which was followed by a transcendent "Looks Like Rain" and it was one of those versions that makes you tell that Bob and Donna were more than just "friends". The "Peggy-O" is simply spectacular. The "Lazy Lightning>Supplication" sends bolts of exciting lightning through the crowd. The following "Sugaree" is sincerely one of the most well-known and well-played ever. If you ever want a reason to prove Jerry is one of the greatest guitarists ever, look no further than this version. It is seriously one of the best versions out there. It stands up to the classic 5/28/77 easily. You want to take it set by set, I think this first set might flow better than the first set of Cornell, even though the Cornell second set is stronger. Still, you can't sleep on this second set.
The second set starts with what you can hear was a drummer's delight during "Samson & Delilah", before Bobby steps up and kills it while Jerry goes to town behind him. After a groovin' "BE Women" a powerful "Estimated" has Bobby singing his heart out. So after these first three smokers, the band pulls out the 77' MVP's "Scarlet>Fire". These two are interchangeable with Cornell, as my favorite versions ever, depending on the day. After what, for this show, "Good Lovin'" isn't a showstopper, the band turns the heat back up for one of the last "Uncle John's Band"'s until 1979. The last jam after the normal end of the song melts into a space that goes deep with Jerry ripping off solo licks and gets out there. And that space drops on a dime into one of the heavyweights of the night "Wharf Rat". Jerry absolutely kills this song. He pours out his soul for it. This may be one of my favorite non-73' "Wharf Rats" ever and then the band turns it upside down and around with an "Around and Around" and ends the proceedings with a "Brokedown Palace". And Phil throws in a hearty "Good Night" for the crowd.

Grateful Musics 30 Grateful Dead Shows in about 30 Days continues with a Gem

Grateful Musics 30 Grateful Dead Shows in about 30 Days continues with a Gem from 10-15-1981 in Melkweg, Amsterdam. Full Video and 411

The Grateful Dead in Amsterdam what could go be more perfect? The band has a tradition of laying eggs at the shows that seem to be a match made in heaven. Look no further than Woodstock or the band members own quotes for other examples. But this show and tour in famed Amsterdam,  Holland is an exception to that or any rule.

Both sets song selection is unusually beautiful, as they play tunes in unexpected places to great ends. The first set is highlighted by a touching"They Love Each Other" > "EL Paso", but the whole first set plays to perfection with a song forward approach.

The second set is so unique that I wore out my cassette version growing up. They take a handful of songs that usual have no reason to be performed  together and a masterpiece unfolds. Enjoy!

In Today's Grateful Music's "Thirty Days of Dead" shows. We Go Back to -6-27-69. By : Greg Heffelfinger

In the very end of the 60's the Dead were starting to veer away from the Live/Dead material and some of the newer stuff was starting to come out. This show has the best of both worlds.
This show is full of surprises from the "Slewfoot" opener with Jerry on pedal steel to Bobby singing "Dire Wolf" then their is the amazing "Dark Star". Towards the end Phil starts trying to steer towards "Lovelight" but nobody bites and the show goes on to "St. Stephen>The Eleven" then of all things ends with "Green Green Grass of Home" and a slower, more deliberate take on "It's All OVer Now, Baby Blue". So it is a wonderful mix of the psychedelic rangers and the cosmic-country of Gram Parsons.
Jerry also plays pedal steel on "Green,Green Grass of Home" and "Dire Wolf". Since this show was a benefit and had other artists banjo player Peter Grant sits in on "Slewfoot" but is barely audible due to getting the taping, "just exactly perfect." Because this show is a mix of the primal and the country dead, we get a lot of early versions of songs that are real treats when you hear what they started as versus what they became. "Casey Jones",only the third one, has a wonderful slower intro and a great middle jam and the "Dire Wolf" that made it onto the reissue as a bonus track is the one from this show. But just when you think that this is all country Dead, this is one of the deepest, grooviest "Dark Stars" out there. It's like the band was saying "Hey, check out this new stuff before we blow out you mind". This version has multiple hints at "The Other One, Feeling Groovy, and Beginnings". It's just amazing. And to wrap it up with such a slowed down "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is just the icing on the cake.

Since the Dead.net is doing Thirty Days of Dead, Playing One or Two Songs at a time, We Are Going to Play Shows. By:Greg Heffelfinger

The plan is to post a Grateful Dead show every day. More or less, from every year. Today's show is a barn burner from 1968. October 12, 1968 is the middle of Primal Dead. They've got the chops now and are really getting down and dirty with each show.
After the had brushed off the cobwebs and started playing more and more of their own material, the band started growing by leaps and bounds. Don't get me wrong, I love the old covers. The "In the Pines" and the "Baby Blues" but once they released Anthem of the Sun and let the psychedelic cat out of the bag and run wild, the band took off. This is an epic show. I hate the word epic but from the beginning "Dark Star" and Bobby's funny banter, this show takes off. I think this might be the best "Cryptical>TOO>Cryptical" I've ever heard. It's literally the only Grateful Dead I've wanted to head bang too. You could tell these guys were serious about what they were doing. After starting with a fast-paced "Dark Star" they just move on to the famous combo of "St.Stephen>The Eleven before going into a "Death Don't Have No Mercy" that Jerry slays, vocally and instrumentally.

There is plenty of funny banter during the show but be prepared to have your wig split by "The Other One" and even though the "Dark Star" is really fast and either Pig or one of the drummers is going off with the wood block scraper it's amazing. They drop hints of "Caution" and "Alligator" all through the second half of the show but they settle on "New Potato Caboose" and just tear it up until finally getting to the end of the show, which is seven minutes of "Feedback", they just don't let up. When you think of a show to go too if you had some of Owsley's finest and a time machine, this is one that should make the list
