The general rule is that the show you miss or the show you just decide to skip is the show the play Dark Side of the Moon, or the show that has all the songs you've been chasing. Or maybe Bob Weir will even come out for an hour. The second show in Alpharetta was an amazing way to end my fall tour.
I was lucky enough to see the Nashville show with Bob Weir. I was there the next night and it felt mellow. After the fourth person backed out on giving me a ride to Alpharetta, I knew they were gonna play Gamehenge or something crazy because that's what happens when you miss a show that you have tickets too. So, I luckily found a friend who I play guitar with who has a family and never gets to go see shows since they never come to Memphis anymore. Well, I've never been happier to miss a show in my life. My friend and myself drove down to Alpharetta well-rested and ready to see the Phish. It was a nice trip and we had a nice room and Phish.net sent me a sbd of the Orpheum 1994 show in Memphis and we talked about how he's been chasing "Rift" for twenty-two years. I said I wanted to hear "Sneakin' Sally" or "Jesus left Chicago". He said he also saw "Character Zero" at almost every show he's been too. He still loves it. The lot was hopping and I met my friends and we took a couple laps and headed for the gates.
I heard they soundchecked "I always wanted it this way" so I was hoping they would play that because that's the one song on Big Boat that want to hear live but haven't heard yet. Once the night kicked off with "Mike's Song" I knew we were in for a hot night. I loved that they put "Ass-Handed" in the middle because I didn't want to kill the mood with a weirdly-placed slow song but Fishman's little ditty works perfectly. Then we dove right into "Weekeapuag" and it was a night where everyone around you was smiling and hugging and I've never been hugged and kissed by so many random beautiful girls. The vibe at the show was just amazing. Then the Fuego track "Waiting All Night" came up and I enjoyed it. I've always enjoyed the way the harmonize on this song and I think it's a nice addition to any first set. Then the chords for Sample rang out and it was a little sloppy but it was a solid version. The second half of the first set did not let up for a second. That Gin was a dark, beautiful masterpiece that went into my boys' "Rift" and it made the whole trip worthwhile to see his face light up when those opening notes sprung from the Gin jam. Next up, "Stash" was a note-perfect rendition of the classic that has been off for a few years for different reasons. Tonight though, the boys' nailed it. Then they followed it with one of my favorite songs, "Funky Bitch". How can you not love that song? It just rocks and Trey was going off and it gave Page a chance to shine too. Mike gave his all to the song and nailed every line and that long note he sings at the end never wavered. "Your Pet Cat" was a treat, being the first time I've caught it. Of course, since my friend was there, they ended the set with "Character Zero" which to me was good because it took it off the list for encores.
When the lights came down after halftime, "Run Like An Antelope" had people bouncing around the room and made everyone of us jump up and down and it felt like an old 1.0 version. It had the energy and the legs to get everyone dancing and after I got some more spike, I was ready to rock. Then the heavy chords for "Fuego" rang out, it coincided with my trip down to pit. There was no one checking tickets and I walked down to about five feet from the rail. Then someone told me that he had gotten there at six and he wouldn't even let me stand next to him. That's okay, the girl next to me saw him being an asshole and gave me a hug and a kiss and we ended up dancing together for "Runaway Jim" and then she lifted my jaw off the floor when the opening of "No Quarter started. I've been waiting to hear that song since they played it. It was something I never thought I would hear. I've heard "Shaggy Dog","Icculus","Kung",etc. and all the rarities that people claim. "No Quarter" was still absolutely amazing and as a dark and jamming "Simple" rang out, I said goodbye to my new friend and we traded numbers but then out of his back pocket Trey dropped "46 Days"and as I continued to head back to the lawn I couldn't help it when Trey jumped on it and ripped into "Sneaking Sally" and I just started to dance to one of my favorite covers. When the other side of the "46 Days" sandwich got put on, I took off again and got back to the lawn to meet my friend and both freak out over what just happened. As the lights came up, I was almost back but I heard the crowd start yelling and then out of all the encore's that were still on the table, freakin' "Makisupa Policeman"! The secret word part about listening to funk and smoking skunk or whatever he said sounded a little awkward. It's still a cool song to be as old as it is. Then came the drop into "First Tube" and I knew I had just seen one of my favorite shows. I know the first night was good. I saw the setlist but haven't heard the show. Still for my money and everyone I talked to after the show this was the better show and a wonderful way to end my little mini-tour. When I looked at the set list from last night, they don't seem to have cooled off any. This is going to be one hell of a Halloween run, if these shows are any indication.

Phish Performs a Saturday Night Special in South Carolina. Setlist and 411.
On Saturday Phish played for the second night at the North Charleston Coliseum. The show got started with the first “Blaze On” opener ever. I would love it as an opener although this version was straightforward. “What's the Use” as gone from a bust out to a regular in the first set. The rest of the first set highlighted songs from the second half of their career. The glaring exception being a first set “Carini” and a always welcomed “Lengthwise”.
The second set opened with “Mercury” and I love this song and will not understand how it did not make the new album. Just has it begun to get interesting, Trey led the band into “Twist”. This is basically how the second set went mostly Saturday Night. In my opinion the best jam of the night came from the live debut of “I Always Wanted It This Way.”It explored some interesting territory and has great potential. The back end of the second set highlight was“Joy”. They play Jacksonville tomorrow night for the first time and a webcast is available via live Phish.
There is not many more beautiful phrases than Phish Fall Tour. I love indoor arenas and the energy that bounces around the room. CK5 has 360 degrees to paint his magic and has way more influence on the show. Last time I saw Phish they played three quality performances at Dicks. If you compared them to most of summer tour the shows were legendary. They definitely have momentum heading into tonight.
Phish is usually more patient during Fall Tour and the music always benefits greatly. 2009 is a perfect example on how the music improves when the spotlight of summer dims. One good sign is the dirty south rarely meets fall tour and that will change tonight. Gamehendge loves the South and was all but ignored this summer. I would be surprised if our favorite characters don't show their faces. I predict a Fall Tour on par with the summer of 2015. They are firing on all cylinders and the next few weeks will be one scorcher after another. Halloween is in fucking Las Vegas and is anybody's guess. I have been on the bus since 1992 and it's so hard to predict what Vermont’s finest will do and how they will play. One thing is certain. Phishing season is now open and the best band touring today will continue their legacy while we Blaze On in amazement.

On Halloween night in Glen Falls,NY Phish played the first of what would become a Phish tradition of donning a musical "costume" but this time the fans voted on the album through the "Doniac Schvice".
Fall tours have a tendency to be good ones. For some reason, Phish really brings the heat in the fall. Maybe because it's mostly indoor venues and not amphitheaters or stadiums but the fall tours of 94-98 all really smoked. This tour was no exception. In fall of 94, there was plenty of "Demand"s and "If I Could" with "Lifeboy" and "Dog-Faced Boy"s to go around. The whole tour, up to Halloween, was marked by gigantic Mike's Groove's and all the cuts off of "Hoist" and "Rift" that people are chasing now that were in steady rotation back then. I remember using "If I Could" for a pee break one night because they played it again. 1994 was a great year leading to a peak moment in 95' which culminated, after a monster Fall tour, in the mind-blowing NYE show of 1995. It was a great time to be a Phish fan. Tickets were 20-30 dollars and could be bought outside the venue or even at the box office still. Although they were starting to sell out regularly, if you wanted in you could get in for less than $50 bucks and that was a shady scalper top-dollar ticket. Unless, it was Halloween or NYE and those sold out quick and the scalpers were out in force. Why do you think it's a lottery instead of mail order? Ticketbastard sells out in one minute because in the middle-to-late nineties, Phish was becoming a powerhouse and was still kind of our little secret. Random townies would see the commotion in a parking lot and ask what's going on and when you said, "Phish is playing" all they said was,"Who?".
Soon enough, our little secret, got out. I know people who were there for Amy's Farm and the Arrowhead Ranch shows are rolling their eyes right now but I was on Grateful Dead tour as soon as I could drive. I started listening to Phish in 1991 on an,*excursion*, and Junta was in the CD player. It had a five-disc changer and Led Zeppelin IV and both discs of Phish's first proper album. Needless to say my mind was blown. So between shows on Dead tour, we would see Phish if they were close. Phish wasn't and to some degree still isn't the easiest band to follow. They would play one-night gigs in off-the-map places and then take off for another one-nighter in a faraway city. It was tough to make some of those drives. Needless to say, it was always a distressing sight to see a VW bus flipped in the median or down the right side of an embankment. You always had to check to find your friends on lot at the next show. No cell phones, remember?
Anyway, after a great tour, the circus landed in Glen Falls, NY. The buzz was of the charts because everyone had put in their vote for what the band would cover for Halloween. Not many people had a full conception of what that would entail. Would they play a few songs or would they dress as the members of the band? The possibilities were endless and speculation was high before the show. Then the word started to leak out: Phish was going to become The Beatles for the second set! There are rumors and then there are RUMORS. You couldn't check your phone or look at the voting on the internet. I get it. I'm old.
Set One from 10-31-94
It wasn't a sure thing on how they were going to do it and of course, Phish played the "Speak to Me" portion of Dark Side of the Moon through the PA, to mess with our heads, before the sound of Ed Sullivan's voice came out of the speakers with the sounds of screaming teenagers. After the exaltation of hearing DSOTM faded into disappointment, the audience slowly realized what that meant. The Beatles or "The White Album" as it is known, was a double-album full of classic songs and the band was going to play the whole thing! The Glen Falls Civic Center was going nuts that night. The only track the band didn't play was "Birthday". Instead they gave Brad Sands a cake while Brad came out dressed as Fishman. Many of you have heard the LivePhish 13 version and it was just one of the Halloween shows that have been released that way. Phish are incredible musicians, obviously, and they put a lot of effort into staging the shows but that came later as they got bigger and more money was available. This night was all about the music. The first set was off-the-chain smoking, with the "Frankenstein" opening the show and with a classic "Harpua" narration with the "Vibration of Life/Death". It's funny how many of those Beatles songs turned up in the early part of the 2016 summer tour. All except for "Piggies" was first played at the little auditorium in Nowheresville, NY. A couple had been teased before. You know what? Screw it, let's go to the tape:

OM PA PA OM PA PA, the "Harpua" with the Vibration of Life/Death" and Trey playing the theme from "Barney and Friends"
Soundcheck: The Old Home Place, Poor Heart, Dog Log > Funky Bitch, Jam
Harpua included the Vibrations of Life and Death. Jimmy decided to put on his favorite album Barney's Greatest Hits, but turned his turntable on the wrong way and started playing it backwards. Fish then proceeded to sing a verse of War Pigs. Trey subsequently quoted I Love You (a.k.a. the theme to Barney & Friends) before Harpua resumed. Poster was swallowed up into the earth by the Vibration of Death. "The Vibration of Death is gone" replaced the usual "The storm is gone." Prior to the Vibration of Life, Wilson was teased and quoted. A Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon tease (the heartbeats from Speak to Me) was pumped through the P.A. at the beginning of the second set. The second set "musical costume" was The Beatles' The Beatles (also known asThe White Album) and was selected via fan vote. All of the White Album songs, other than Piggies, were Phish debuts, although Ob La Di, Ob La Da had been jammed or teased on many occasions. Glass Onion's lyrics were changed to "I told you 'bout Guyute the pig." Piggies was played for the first time since November 14, 1985 (875 shows). HYHU was teased prior to Why Don't We Do It in the Road. Birthday wasn’t sung; Page and Mike noodled a bit while Fish presented a birthday cake to Brad Sands, who accepted it while wearing a Jon Fishman dress. Helter Skelter ended with the band singing "I've got blisters on my fingers" a cappella to the tune of Back In My Hometown. Honey Pie's lyrics were changed to reference "Cactus." Cry Baby Cry ended with Fish on vacuum with Revolution 9 segueing out of the vacuum solo. The background tape playing along with Revolution 9 was Mike’s composition He Ent to the Bog from Phish’s White Tape. The song ended with Fish stark naked and running around while the band blew bubbles and waved. Good Night was taped from the album and closed the second set. The third set began with a Custard Pie tease, while Bowie contained aGilligan's Island theme tease from Mike and Antelope's intro contained a Stash tease from Trey. The Costume Contest contained a "Charge!" tease from Page. This show was officially released as Live Phish 13. The soundcheck's Jam was released as an iTunes bonus track called "Glen Falls Soundcheck Jam" and contained a Frankenstein tease from Mike and a May The Force Be With You (The Force Theme from Star Wars) tease from Trey. The Poor Heart and Dog Log in the soundcheck were slow versions.
The amps have barely cooled off and people are already jonesing for more. The rumor mill is spinning thanks to this photo taken a couple of months ago but surfacing just now.

Speculation has been brewing for awhile now on whether Dead and Company have any more shows or not but this picture seems to suggest that a fall tour is in the works. John Mayer has other commitments but he's having so much fun, to quote one of my favorite authors,"My favorite thing about deadlines is the sound of them whooshing by". I've done some independent research and the only conflict was Gwen Stefani is booked at Shoreline on Oct. 8. So that is the only conflict and these aren't verified but that's how the rumor mill works. None of the other venues on the picture have anything up for those dates. So? We can all cross our crazy fingers the music won't stop.
