Phish continued it's onslaught of their M.S.G run last night with rarities and some delicious jamming. While I have been recovering from S.C.I's amazing show last night, I keep listening to the "Tweezer>Sparks" from Phish's cooking second set last night. I love The Who and loved it in that slot of the set list . It's all about tonight! Here is hoping you are dancing at midnight.

Grateful Music's Facebook Page has hit a milestone of a 100K fans. To celebrate we are giving away Prizes.
Our Facebook page just surpassed 100,000 music lovers. 
More importantly out of that number 98.622% of our family are actually empathetic caring people. I have met some of my best friends while discussing music on the site. Hell, I met my roommate through the magic of our community. If I would have planned this company, it would have failed years ago. The magic that The Phish and the Dead create found it's way into our sandbox. Since 100,000 is a big even number and it's the season of What Now? We are going to show how Grateful we are for our fans. Until next year we will be giving away authentic Phish and the Dead memorabilia out of my own personal collection. You could win a pair of tickets to see The Grateful Dead or David Bowie. (Time machine not included)

Over the last three years our sandbox has became Grateful Music Productions. This is all because you love music as much as we do. Our clubhouse is now a business and it's just keeps getting better. Sammy and I started this with one fundamental rule. Everything is not fucking epic. We wanted a forum where we could talk about our musical community honestly as we see it. We are not for everyone and that is fine. But since we stopped writing for the big boys and concentrated on what matters music and the love we bring. Our Sunday Sit in this Week Is Medeski, Martin and Wood Sitting in with Phish for a 45 minute Keyboard Jam.
This show from the tiny State Palace in New Orleans is arguably the best Phish show and the best Medeski, Martin and Wood show rolled up in one. I had to ask my one remaining unconverted Phish Phreak to go and he was not the mold of a Phish fan. Hell, until that night I am not sure if I ever saw Jason Kinslow with a hair out of place. But I needed a ride so I begged and he throws me a sold.( Jason translation =that meant favor). We walk into the plush venue greeted by the sound of 1950's Jazz pulsating through the intimate Theatre. He said "this is amazing" and all I could muster was a small grin. I was not prepared to discover a band with a sound I thought went extinct with the underground jazz clubs during prohibition. To make a long story short, that night in 1995 was destiny. My brother discovered and got Phish. But I discovered one of my favorite bands as well that night, M.M.W. They came out and joined Phish for a 45 minute improvisational jam to close the epic night. Those were the best days of my life. Enjoy this week's Sunday sit in that doubles as one of my favorite shows and jams.

Mike Gordon and the amazing musicians he has assembled (the Mike Gordon Band already!) have blown the roof off what is usually a side project. T.A.B is a side project, but Mike is playing in a band. Kimock's offspring combined with Gordon is the most interesting rhythm section since Plil Lesh and Joe Russo.
My staff writer Sam is on tour and I must admit, I thought "who goes on Gordo tour?" A very happy Phish head is the obvious answer. He went to a magical place where "Spock's Brain" is an encore and "Meat" is overplayed. Plus their originals are so damn ......original! The city of brotherly love mostly stayed home, the comfortably crowded dance floor were mostly kids on mini tour. Mike Gordon is almost a different person on this tour. Well, almost! Long live Cactus.

Last month you performed with Phish in Nashville. In addition to some of your own songs, you sang one of their tunes. How did that come about?
It was actually suggested to me that we might want to do the tune and so I listened to it and I figured, “Well this might be fun to sing.” So I proposed that to Trey. He liked the idea so we went ahead and did that. It was a matter of I was in the same town that they were in for an evening and I was off and they were playing, so I was there with bells on.
It had been a while since you’d appeared with Phish. I’m curious if you noticed any changes in their sound?
I didn’t hear a huge change. I heard definition and refinement and stuff like that to their approach. Their basic overall sound was the same as it was 10 years ago when I sat in with them. The Grateful Dead didn’t change much in its overall thrust over the decades. We got bigger and more developed and all that kind of stuff and that’s what they’re doing.
Trey has spoken about everything that he took away from the Fare Thee Well experience, some of which he hopes to apply to Phish. I’m curious if he said anything to you about any of that after the Nashville show?
I’m sure he did. I’m not entirely sure that I heard it that way. [Laughs] We just had fun playing together he’s a great player.
Do you anticipate that down the road, the two of you might do something again together?
I’d be surprised if that doesn’t happen. But we both have to have a little time on our hands and both of us are hellaciously busy right now.
Final question: There are a number of people out there who are anxious and frustrated about the looming Trump presidency. What do you say to those folks?
We absolutely have no choice other than to accept this as a challenge and to rise to it. We’ve got to play the ball as it lies. I’m actually kind of fired up about it.
I’d say that people who might be inclined to sleep through stuff or be uncompromising in their approach to politics and might have some thinking to do because we’re in new territory now as far as I can see.
Every day things progress, every day things roll on. We’re down the road now. I don’t expect it’s ever going to be comfortable or cozy with regard to politics. I don’t think that happens. So it’s just a matter of how much of it you can indulge and endure and how much you’re willing to participate. Everyone has to have to sort that out individually and then offer what they have.
Going back to the 2000 election if every Deadhead in the state of Florida had voted it’d be a very different world today. There are enumerable parallels with other folks with regard to this election as well.
The way this government is set up if you want to be an absolutist you’re always going to be on the outside. If you want to be reasonable and you work with people you might get some progress made. It’s a personal choice that one has to make and I prefer to be involved. I have kids, I want to try to make things happen I want to try to shape things.
I’m not going to insist on having everything my way exactly or I’m going to take my ball and go home. We live in a democracy and it requires our participation, otherwise the folks who want it the most and oftentimes those are the greediest among us will be glad to step in and take it.

The Opening Video of all the Ninety-Nine Albums that Got the "Axe" Before Festival 8
If you went to Festival 8 then you remember that they started the rumor mill by chopping off states. Then they posted 100 albums and said one would be the winner. Soon we were all checking every day to see which would get the "axe".

Well, as you remember it came down to five contestants. Genesis(Lamb Lies Down on Broadway), Radiohead(Kid A), The Rolling Stones(Exile on Main Street, King Crimson(Lark's Tongue in Aspic), and Michael Jackson(Thriller) with the eventual winner being, of course The Rolling Stones' classic Exile on Main Street.
Before the Halloween set the band played a mashup video of all 99 albums building up to the finale. That video has finally surfaced. Here it is by Eclectic Method:

When I woke up this morning I never imagined I would get a pleasant surprise. A phish show from my second favorite Phish tour appeared on YouTube. A show that I attended and still hold dear in my many show memories. I love America!
The whole show is a highlight. They encored with "Theme from the bottom" and everything that preceded it is certified hold. The 2001>Maze that opened the second half is especially Phishy. Enjoy!

Phish Ramps Up the Tension with Another High-Octane Outing Last Night. By: Greg Heffelfinger
So far this fall tour, it has seemed to be one on and one off as the band has wound its' way through the south to Vegas for Halloween. After a good show the second night with one soaring jam at the beginning of the second set, they came out last night and laid down a solid show that was so hot even the normally weaker songs were solid.

Hopefully, the one on, one off trend stops tonight. All the money is on a Bowie album but it's so obvious that anyone that knows anything about Phish knows that the obvious is exactly what not to expect. "Space Oddity" isn't even on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and they've played "Purple Rain" way more times than "Space Oddity". Everyone who has read Trey's recent interview about hanging at the Purple One's house knows how much respect they have for him. But guessing the album is for another article. How cool would it be to see Europe 72' though? They are also due to play something from the 90's. They've hit every other decade before so I'm just putting that out there.
Following the trend set so far, they opened with a cut from last year's Halloween album, this time the call was "The Dogs". Maybe a Pink Floyd reference? They then dropped into a short but deep "Ghost" that got the crowd ready to lose their minds when the distinctive first notes of "Funky Bitch" rang out. Mike threw out all he had vocally and Trey was bending those notes so hard I thought he was gonna break a string. The energy was already bouncing around the room and this blew the lid off the pot. Everything from here on out was quality. A short "Chalkdust Torture" led into a heartlfelt rendition of "Army of One" and Mike led the band through a very well-played "How Many People Are You" that went hard through the changes. This song was the candles on the cake that was "Stash". This song has gone through some changes,with Trey flubbing notes and a lack of exploration over the summer but since Dick's this song has been full-steam ahead. The Atlanta version and now this are at the top of the list as far as 3.0 "Stash" versions rank in my book. I didn't catch any flubs and the jam coming out of it was dark and dissonant and the tension and release that is the song's bread and butter had Trey and the boys toying with the energy in the room. They chose to take that energy and put it into a good "Theme from the Bottom" and even though I would've chosen differently, that's why they are on stage and I'm writing about it. A standard, rocking "Suzy G" finished an uneventful set on paper but an energetic, well-played and enthusiastic set at the show.
The standard call of a "Down with Disease" is nothing out of the ordinary and it's almost just that, a standard opener now. However, this version went so deep and far out that it felt like a disease that creeped up my spine and into my brain. The band was so tight and each member took each other's idea and ran with it and they played it so well that it made me sit up and take notice. I'm not a huge DWD fan but this one is smoking and then it flowed right into "Birds of a Feather" without missing a beat. They moved so far out during the DWD that they made the transition look easy. The intro to "Birds of a Feather" is not very melodic on it's own but the DWD jam just let it slide right in. After a few stutter steps from Fish and teases of the opening, the band jumped on it and it sounded as natural as any segue should. Although I never thought I'd hear a DWD->BOAF. It was one of my favorite jams of the night and I don't particularly like BOAF. Probably because I when I was touring it seemed like they played it every night. Still, this was a killer combo and a great way to start the set.

After a short "Fuego", Trey sang Bob Weir's new song, "Miss You". Sorry but that is a Bob Weir song now. Then came the second of the second set highlights. The "Harry Hood" moved through all it's composed pieces and fell into the jam with easily and without any flubs and the whole band decided to jump into the jam and it was developing at a fierce pace and you could hear the boys cooking up something special. It just had a feeling that there was more going on behind the curtain and maybe that's why there were no "woo's". By the way, what's up with the woo's? The crowd did it at Nashville during Hood. Is that the thing now, whenever the band slows down or has a syncopated jam the crowd feels the need to woo? The band swung from the out-there Hood jam into the rare "Have Mercy" that has only been played fourteen times, including last night. They only seem to bust into it when they are in the middle of some other huge jam, like last night. It's shown up in Antelope and SOAM as well as Hood and I thought it was a welcome treat after a five-year hiatus.

They then dropped back into Hood for the closing segment and went right into "A Day in the Life" to end the show. After a perfunctory but fun "Character Zero" the night was over.

So now it's time to find out what the band has cooked up for us for Hallow's eve. All the interviews with Trey just say, "I'm so excited" but that guy has to be the most optimistic guy on the planet. I've met him several times and the only time he's not smiling or talking excitedly or energetically is when he's got his "O" face on and is on stage playing. They always say don't meet your heroes but Trey is one of the nicest guys ever. So now that night three is in the books, it's time for the unveiling of the cover album. Last year will be hard to top but I have faith that they can do it because this band is on fire and it's going to be a great night in Vegas on Halloween.
