                         "A Night of Healing" 

 

“Hoka hey!” is a native battle cry, that literally translates as “Today is a good day to die.” But the true intentions of the phrase are to inspire that Today is a good day to live. Nahko & Medicine for the People’s latest album, “HOKA”, empowers that exact feeling. On Thursday night the 26th, Nahko & MFTP rolled through The Concord on their Hoka: A Call to ActionTour. 

 

The band took the stage to a sold out, roaring and hyped crowd with A Tribe Called Red’s Electric Pow Wow. This set the tone for the night, that this wasn’t just a concert, but a gathering. This gathering was ready to dance and kept the motion flowing through the entire set, matching Nahko nearly word for word on every track of the night, which were mostly tunes representingthe “HOKA” album. 

 

The band displayed powerful synergy throughout the show, rotating both impressive solos and cohesive climaxes that only seemed to peak higher and higher with the frenzied enjoyment from the crowd. Like the message behind “Hoka,” and the theme to the tour, Nahko encouraged his fans to “Kick ass in 2017” before an inspiring encore of Are You Ready and beautifully done sing-along rendition of Tus Pies.

Finally a festival lineup to get excited about and start saving money to attend. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, returns  April 28 – May 7.  The huge and impressive lineup for Jazz Fest 2017 has been released. Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty and Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds are Headlining but the talent is everywhere.

An unearned gem of a studio recording from Alan Bershaw has been uploaded to the achieve. Its definitely contains all or most of The Grateful Dead members and most likely other musicians such as Ned Lagin and Merl Sanders. It's is an amazing piece of music. That is where the facts end. I included Alan's complete description and a few other opinions. Whatever it ends up being called means very little as I am jamming it in the background.

This is not to be confused with any of the content on those February 1975 SNACK rehearsals for the Kezar Stadium gig, as Crosby and Saunders are not present here. It also does not match any other "Blues For Allah" studio outtakes tapes that I'm aware of. It's questionable whether or not Ned Lagin is present here, but I only hear Keith Godchaux playing electric piano. This leads me to believe that this is just the core band with Mickey Hart back on board. There are no vocals, so Donna Godchaux is not present on this recording.

The reel case only contains the notation "The First Day" and a date of "January." I have a few theories for this notation. It could mean that it was literally the first day of 1975, as in January 1, 1975. I think a more likely theory is that it was simply the first day of 1975 studio sessions sometime in January. Bob Gurman, who I inherited this reel from, thought it was the actual working title of this composition, since it was still an instrumental and prior to Robert Hunter's lyrics being written. I've also speculated that this could have been recorded as a guide reference for the band and additional Kezar musicians prior to those rehearsals. It may also have been recorded for Hunter as a template for writing lyrics. Or some combination of all of these possibilities…

I should also add that I'm aware of another version of this recording. I also have a DAT that I think I received in trade from Steven Martin back in the early 1990s. That contains this same recording, but with it divided into two sequences, with a short break in the middle. On this reel, those two sequences are seamlessly spliced together. Despite this spliced version originating from the same two sequences, the reel sounds significantly better and has considerably more dynamic range than the two sequences found on the DAT.

I've scoured through all known notation for 1975 Grateful Dead studio sessions, outtakes and rehearsals, but can find no mention or match to this particular recording - or of any January 1975 studio recordings for that matter. Surprising, since this is such remarkable quality. It very well may be the earliest recording of the Grateful Dead's return following the 1974 retirement. Have a listen. Its also the earliest recording for what would become the "SNACK Jam," that they'd soon begin rehearsing with additional musicians (Ned Lagin, Merle Saunders and David Crosby) the following month.

Subject: just for argument's sake 

Doesn’t this music seem too far developed to be from Jan ’75? The Feb 75 tapes are all pretty loose and jammy, and it seems odd that the band would be performing something this complicated on their first night back in the saddle.

Also, I don’t have McNally’s GD bio handy, but I believe he says that the first session at Ace’s was by a local band (not the GD) on the night of a full moon, which would have been Jan 27 or Feb 26.

The music is sweet, if you dig these rehearsal recordings, which I do. Wish there was more!

It's faint, but there are two, sometimes three keyboards. Check out at 20:10 or so - you hear acoustic piano and two electric pianos. My guess is that both Ned Lagin and Merl Saunders are on here.

Sonic Bloom: The Unified Field Music Festival announced the initial lineup with the supergroup Gigantic Cheese Biscuits topping the marquee. 

 

The 2017  Sonic Bloom annual music festival will take place June 15,16,17 & 18th at Hummingbird Ranch in Spanish Peaks Country, Colorado. The initial artist  lineup includes music for every pallet with an interesting supergroup on top of the poster. Gigantic Cheese Biscuits will feature both members of Big Gigantic, S.C.I members Michael Kang, Michael Travis and Jason Hann and the Biscuits' Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner.  - In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the iconic comedy classic Wayne's World, SpectiCast and Paramount Pictures are hosting excellent, two-night, theatrical events on February 7^th and 8^th, 2017.  Fans across the U.S. will have the chance to party on with Wayne and Garth when the film returns to more than 400 theaters. Wayne's World, directed by Penelope Spheeris, grossed $183 million in its theatrical run, placing it as the tenth highest-grossing film of 1992 and the highest-grossing of the 11 films based on "Saturday Night Live" skits.      The String Cheese Incident announced the venues for the 2017 installment of  the Winter Carnival. It reminds this old fan of the epic Carnivals in the late 90s with all the intimate venues. 

     They just finished the best new year's run musically in years and now they will descend on the same ski towns that launched their careers over twenty years ago. The Roots Revival Tour will be just what the doctor ordered after the upcoming Mexican Incident.

    A statement addressed to the fans of Summer Camp broke the news earlier today. I was not against the idea of moving the favored music festival. But read for yourself as I included the actual letter. 

Dear Summer Camp Fam,

I am pleased to announce that we have come to an agreement with Three Sisters Park. Summer Camp Music Festival 2017 will again take place at its longstanding home in Chillicothe, Illinois.

I know the past couple weeks have been a bit unsettling, and I greatly appreciate all the support we received from you.

It was refreshing and inspiring to feel all your love. It again renewed my faith and commitment to doing what we do.

I would like to thank the great people at Kennekuk County Park, The Vermillion County Conservation District, and the community in Danville, who, knowing the uncertainty of the situation, put untold hours into helping us devise a plan to move should it have become necessary. As I stated before, I am hoping that relationship will turn into fruitful ventures in the future.

But again, most of all I must thank you, our loyal fans, for continuing to support this crazy journey we embarked on 16 years ago and for continuing to show that know matter the turns and twists, it all comes down to a love for the music and community that we have grown together.
