Trey Anastasio will Perform a Solo Concert Series and what It means for Phish Tour.
We will get our Phish this summer, it will just be a smaller helping than we are accustomed to having and it the number won't satisfy many fan's appetite. But, after the New Year Run and Mexico how can we argue with the formula. We were warned by the band that this year would be a light touring year. In addition we see the Gordon and T.A.B shows appearing on many festival's marquees. While Trey Anastasio Band has many dates, he is hitting the road solo for a string of intimate acoustic shows that are bound to be special. You can find all the ticket information and pre-sale opportunities on Trey’s website. Here are the three confirmed dates as of now.

What does this mean for Phish tour? Well, as I grow older I have become much more a cup is half full guy. One could argue that if the members of Phish did not get these other musical outlets to scratch, it would negatively effect Phish's music and their heathy relationships. I am one of those people. But, I do know Dick's is a go and we all heard the 13 night residence at M.S.G. (please no!). So, atleast there will be Phishing Season! In the meantime enjoy their side projects and the massive amount of quality music in our scene today.

SpongeBog Demo - The wackiest C64 tune you'll hear all week!
As you know Indie Retro News prides itself on mentioning games, teasers and compilations, but the latest C64 SpongeBog Demo by Max of Flat 3 Hackers was just too good to miss. This is one of the wackiest and most upbeat tunes I've heard on the C64 by far, and apparently the music is related to the catchy tune playing at the Spongebob Arcade Machine, which is located at Planet Fun, Ingoldmells.

The String Cheese Incident turns in an Incredible Performance over Three Nights that Culminates in an Amazing New Year's Eve Masterpiece. Words by Kevin Long Photos by: Emily Takacs
The String Cheese Incident performed masterfully as they welcomed the New Year with three hometown shows. In what has become a holiday tradition for S.C.I and their fans, the band has played at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado for five years running.. This run, to my ears’ delight, sounded far superior than years past and the music has not shined this bright in a decade. They blended covers, new material and treasured gems beautifully to produce three amazing, albeit different, shows.
The boys kicked off the festivities with an adventurous “Round the Wheel”. The majority of hesitation anybody had about Kyle’s broken wrist disappeared has the music did not leave another option.
Beside the light-hearted version of “Master Blaster” with Jason on lead vocals the entire first set was the stuff of legend. The “Miss Brown’s Teahouse” into “Rollover” that concluded the initial set of music was mesmerizing. The music bled into a full fledged Star Wars jam honoring the passing of Carrie Fisher.
The second set was a Big Gigantic Incident as the boys were joined by familiar faces Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken of “Big Gigantic”. This led to adventurous versions of Cheese classics as the majority of tunes were woven together by Big Gigantic musical hooks. The rollercoaster started on “Bam” and stopped nearly two hours later with an epic “Desert Dawn” that had the tired faithful dancing to the end of a rousing triple encore that began with “Rosie”. S.C.I. made a profound musical statement on the first night of the run and what followed was joyous every bit as genius.
The second night began with an aggressive ”One Step Closer” and the night unfolded like magical 12-30th shows from the past. It had Bust-outs like “When the music over”, “Land’s End” and “Shaking the Tree”. It had a surprising debut in the form of “Nothing but Flowers” by The Talking Heads. Most importantly the band played flawlessly whether Michael Kang shined while delivering his classics or Billy picked his acoustic during “Restless Wind”.
The entire band practiced patience the entire run which led to inspiring improvisation by every member which in turn produced authentic jams. This was on full display during the explosive show the boys delivered on this, the second evening. The crowd piled out of the arena with shit eating grins also knowing we still had another show of our band firing on every cylinder the following evening.
Nobody in the sold out arena had any doubt that the hometown boys would not deliver anything short of a spectacle for New Year's Eve. Whatever brought you to the 1st Bank Center on N.Y.E, S.C.I produced it in spades. The music was breathtaking for three sets, the special effects were explosive, daring and original. Some moments are best seen than explained, so enjoy the official video of the physodelic ball drop.
It was a perfect evening. The elusive “San Jose” started off the holiday in a fitting manner. Over the course of the next five hours the String Cheese Incident delivered a special performance and nothing has sounded sweeter in the new year in a long time. They will be in Mexico in a few weeks and have already announced a spring tour full of intimate venues. The future has not looked this bright for this band in a long time. Happy New Year? Damn Right!

Widespread Panic: NYE Nashville 2016 (More Of The Usual Shenanigans) A Review by Jamband Purist Photos (W.S.P. FB page) & complete audio of 12/31
Our love for music tends to spread ourselves throughout the four corners of the country so we can celebrate with our respective favorite band. for every New Year's season. We must remember that we are all the same in many ways and can all find common ground, you just gotta poke around . While some of us headed to MSG with their favorite Phriends or Denver to get Cheesie; this New Years I again chose my long time favorite Widespread Panic, who has yet to disappoint in my 5 years of NYE shows. My review will tackle the 30th, Nashville itself and then the New Year’s Eve show.
Night 1: "The Hordes Descend Upon Music City"
The show opened with "Porch Song" but I was a bit too busy waiting in line to get into the venue to really enjoy it. It took an extremely long time to get into Bridgestone Arena and it also seemed very confusing in many ways: perhaps the staff was unable to keep up with demand of its patrons or had no idea that the horde was about to descend upon them with the ferocity of all 2016's pent up aggression/agitation. "Space Wrangler" was the next solid performance. I opted for a seat in the back with lots of room for all my friends to boogie together. I "suffered" through...
"Last Straw" brings back-home, kick stomping jams. It's very reminiscent of southern gospel, with killer licks thrown in by the master guitar wizard, Jimmy Herring; the entire band letting him take off into a spacey solo. I love "Rock" a Panic staple but Duane still gives it away; one of my favorite things about "Rock" was that it used to surprise me. Todd was a master of subtlety, something Duane has yet to master. (He seems more like the John Bonham type, slam and pound kinda guy) This was not so with this particular "Rock," we all felt it coming. "Postcard" is always welcomed with open arms. The backstory is as good as the song itself but this is truly a fan favorite. You can feel the energy of the crowd rise to a peak whenever they perform it.
The boys seemed to be tight and really holding to the standards that they have built for years. While the tightness didn't allow for much risk taking or improv in this first set, consistency is the key to Panics long existence. "Diner" came on strong Jimmy, taking this machine to second gear, ripping it apart and bringing it to a stop with squeals and squawks. JB, "basking in the light" and making "sticky buns." (I always thought this song had some sexual connotation, like many of their songs, this only confirms my theories.) Great use of versatile improvisation in this song, showing amazing skills as musicians; building up into a great organ intro by JoJo >"Blackout Blues"... get my head up off the ground. "Junior," I love your dog I really do. Standard performances for these songs but then Jimmy screams that PRS right into "Fishwater" lights whipping around like a psychedelic tornado, Dave egging Jimmy on with those pocket riffs that say, "If you don't take the solo, I will."
Set 2- Starts off with "Greta" and I always wonder why it's either, yellow rabbits or yellow jackets? This song/band is the perfect platform for Jimmy Herring to shred, there is no better fit in the Jam world, period. I am still constantly amazed at his guitar virtuosity.
"Bears Gone Fishing" is a sexy backstage story about a Halloween show, this was one of my favorites of the night and any night they play it.
"Surprise Valley" saw great interludes and exchanges between instruments; intellectual musical conversations were happening onstage and it was palpable. "Climb To Safety" is a great singalong but check out the original Jerry Joseph lyrics, a much different song.
"Good People" was a sing along as well but they kept it standard musically, heck we all need a break. "North" was rousing and made you want to hop a train and head to Alaska for gold or another romatic fantasy. This song included an extended jam like I've never seen before but was still within standard limits and they didn't venture out too far. An obvious, "Drums" came next, which lead into, "Cease Fire." One of my new favorites, which truly exemplifies Widespread Panics Southern Gothic sound: beautifully epic, ups and downs, with high emotional qualities entrenched in not only the chords but the lyrics, as well. Both, "Stevens Cat" and "Sell Sell" were within standard quality and nothing to write about. They concluded the show with a rousing encore "Protein Drink/Sewing Machine" is always one of my favorite Jimmy solos. "End of the Show," props to the lighting tech, who really knows how to work those disco balls.
(On Nashville)
The streets of Nashville are reminiscent of a war-zone or the aftermath of a WWII bombing. Cranes assault the landscape, and bull dozers scour the earth to greater depths while high risers are being built constantly, higher and higher, above the legendary music capital. The main strip Broadway, had music every five steps; every bar filled to the brim with tourists in cowboy hats and drunk attitudes. This is bar band heaven and the acts that actually stick out, don't stay downtown for long. I roamed the streets for awhile but wasn't attracted to the Faux-Southern city. Nashville is up and coming with a lot of construction but its vibes seemed extremely tourist ridden and it didn't feel like a southern city by any means, as much as it would like to present itself that way.
Night 2: New Years Eve 2016 (Let's Do The Timewarp Again)
I avoided the lines of the previous evening because I arrived for the show much earlier. There were picket lines set up with over a dozen individuals holding signs and yelling from bullhorns about hell and damnation. I had seen these groups before at other shows but nothing to this extent. At one point, they even did a little march down the Main Street, spewing ignorance and intolerance along the way, like hateful paraders throwing out poison candy to the people. New Year's Eve is always an emotional time for me. The New Year is the only time where I can truly feel immediate change is brought forth in my life. A new year, a new life. It may be all in my head but it can be a motivating force. I was able to score a show poster and helped an older lady roll her poster up for her husband's Christmas present. She gave me a kiss on the cheek so, yes, JBP got a NYE kiss. New Years is a time to reflect on one's life. This being my last New Years in my 20s, there was a lot to think about: loss, death and also the future and things to come. Anyway, enough with the cliches, onward to 2017 and more healing with W.S.P..
Set 1:
"Blue Indian" kicked off the holiday in style. It's a classic of the classics and there is no need to go any further, either you know or you don't. Now, we all feel the medicine take. This was an extremely standard take on this song but the crowd went wild regardless. "Holden Oversoul” kept the electric vibe alive throughout the sold out arena."Her Dance Needs No Body" was a very poignant and haunting song, especially with strings; the band holding back letting the strings carry the eeriness of the song into a strong, epic conclusion. This was very Southern Gothic.
"Crazy" was followed by, "Still Crazy After All These Years," which JB restarted saying, "Let's start that one again." The crowd goes wild, even for tiniest mistakes. We are all still crazy after all these years and that's the truth... "Expiration Day" seemed fitting for this years occasion and I sat down and thought about my life for this one. Where I had been and where I was going. In the end, we don't really know the answers to the future, we just have to ride it out till the end.
2nd Set:
JB Opens up..."More Of The Usual Shenanigans" "Pigeons" was straightforward with great light production, showing off the diversity of their light show and the addition of two strips of lights in the middle of the venue and 5 Disco balls. "Henry Parsons" was absolutely ripping and I can't comment as much as I'd like for some of these jams because, I was grooving pretty hard. "Rebirtha" All the faces light up as the heroes take the field.
Mega blasters take the stage for "Sharon." I just love the lyrics, "She walks, she talks, she crawls on her belly like a reptile!" This was the crowd favorite; the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again! The next few songs were standards. It seems these shows were well rehearsed due to all the sit-in performances. Still, great musically just not a lot of improvisation, only musical envelopment and instrumental/vocal elements added and so well rehearsed. This is by mean son complaint. Next was, "Tail Dragger" and "Tall boy" which both while great, were still standard musically. A Fiddle player who was not Nicky Sanders, joined the band for "Ain't Life Grand." While this set didn't differ much from the original versions with additives, it did show off the meticulous practice it took with all the band members and instruments/harmonies.
3rd Set: Here is where things start to get fuzzy. No, I wasn't drinking or anything like that but the music sure gave me a buzz. By this time, I was dancing and had forgotten all about taking notes and keeping track of the songs. I could lie and say things like, "A little Help From My Friends" blew the crowds mind or, "Disco" brought the audience to their feet, as they screamed and blah blah blah. But of course they did, that's why we all go to shows, that's why we all love these songs. From here on, I will only comment on a few noteworthy mentions.
"Up All Night" has become a NYE tradition, this specific version accentuating the use of the Mccrary Sisters vocal prowess. I enjoyed the very jazzy, big band cover of Van Morrison's, "Moondance" with great horn solos and work from the auxiliary players. "Mexico" with horns is always a great addition.
While getting soaked with water never gets old, "Chilly Water" was full of killer guitar work from both Jimmy and Dave. The lights were amazing and I was super impressed by the precision in which the light engineer could anticipate the bands every move. They breezed through, "All Time Low" with exceptional vocals from The Mccrary Sisters but picked it up again for "Red Hot Mama."
The cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" was considerably funny, considering the scene outside the venue with Christian warriors commanding attention. "Stop. Hey, what's that sound?" Ohh no it's just those crazy people yelling at me again. "GO TO HELL HIPPIES!!!"
The ball ballbusting "Burning Down The House" encore was obviously more than anyone was expecting. I can't believe how still my phone camera stayed. I was grooving pretty hard.
After the show, a few my friends entered into an alternate universe and began to drag me into it. There was some sort of time warp outside the venue, with fake nitrous balloons and even actors. I inspected the CO2 tank and found myself in my hotel robe, yelling at a "hotdog vendor" in the streets of Nashville at 4 am, completely sober, but very tired. Needless to say, Nashville is a strange city with a diverse culture that is teeming with all kinds of interesting influences. Nashville may be "Music City" but it's not always the music I am trying to hear.
As for Widespread Panic, they let it be known that they will be touring next year and all is right with the Jam world. I will not miss another Panic New Years as long as they are still playing. I love this band more than ever and can see why they consistently bring the Jam world to its knees.

Grateful Music's Facebook Page has hit a milestone of a 100K fans. To celebrate we are giving away Prizes.
Our Facebook page just surpassed 100,000 music lovers. 
More importantly out of that number 98.622% of our family are actually empathetic caring people. I have met some of my best friends while discussing music on the site. Hell, I met my roommate through the magic of our community. If I would have planned this company, it would have failed years ago. The magic that The Phish and the Dead create found it's way into our sandbox. Since 100,000 is a big even number and it's the season of What Now? We are going to show how Grateful we are for our fans. Until next year we will be giving away authentic Phish and the Dead memorabilia out of my own personal collection. Over the last three years our sandbox has became Grateful Music Productions. This is all because you love music as much as we do. Our clubhouse is now a business and it's just keeps getting better. Sammy and I started this with one fundamental rule. Everything is not fucking epic. We wanted a forum where we could talk about our musical community honestly as we see it. We are not for everyone and that is fine. But since we stopped writing for the big boys and concentrated on what matters music and the love we bring. We have grown without being own by the publicists. They are some of our biggest supporters. Five your ago we had almost 6,000 fans.

We are an organically grown company because we have never spent one dollar to promote ourselves. On our Grateful Music Production's YouTube channel we have over seven hundred videos of live performances only one of Pink Talking Fish. Well, I know it's ok to profit off the ads on most jamband videos. But my only “Pink Talking Fish” clip I had ads on because I considered it under the third-party karaoke rule. I did not think much of the band but you know who are big fans? BMI, the owners of the largest catalog of music in the world. When the internet killed the radio star, BMI couldn't sit around and collect royalties off of other people's' art. BMI needed a plan to find new revenue. It was desperate,ignorant and was doomed to fail. They decided to come after music clubs that charged an admission for live music in the past. Invented some formula to put a price tag on 20 years of unpaid royalties and literally sued clubs for millions.The kicker is those clubs had young bands or weekend rock stars who besides providing entertainment they inadvertently gave free advertising due to they mainly played hit songs and were paid in for free beer and peanuts. Any head knows you can't bleed blood from a turnip and most clubs closed. The High Tone and Newbies come to mine in Memphis. You ever wonder why a twenty minute "Rock n Roll" used to be labeled on LivePhish.com as being less than 10 minutes and it became the Greek Theater Jam or whatever the venue was during the 14 minutes of bliss? BMI charges by the minute. So get ready Pink Talking Fish, because it's about time to lawyer up.
They have no shame or understanding of anything but money. They actually came after Beale Street where Rock and Roll was invented because a white man sang the blues. The irony being Elvis did not write one song but atleast he credited the artist. The home of rock n roll was about to be in financial ruin by the same tradition that gave birth to the music itself. It was insanity and scared a city that relies on the "Smokestack Lightning's" and "The Thrill is Gone" that bring in big overseas tourist dollars. The W.C. Handy Blues Foundation made a political deal (code for bribe, down south) to save all the historic clubs. They volunteered to pay money only on "Mustang Sally" and thanks to their political connections it's only played every 10 feet now(JOKE). But those damned music fans in Europe pledged to stop coming unless they could hear songs they love and know. "Ride, Sally, Ride" still makes bartenders drink, musicians cry and drunk tourists dry hump.
One year ago at "Fare Thee Phil" it cost more to see Pink Talking Fish on StubHub than Kimock, Greene, and Vega's historic afterparty . I don’t feel for a band whose name grew with every possible dollar. I swear one night they were Pink Talking Phish and Bowie is Dead at the same time. Well,like John "CampCougarMelon" or whatever he is calling himself, used to sing "Ain't that America, for you and me..".Now it looks like Little Pink Talking lawsuits for you and me. This is not fact but far from fiction. In the spirit of Pink Talking Fish let's call it an editorial thinkpiece breaking news article. In related funny stuff, I know not everyone are musical nerds like we are but if you're still confused, try to remember Vanilla Ice trying to defend the hook on"Ice,Ice Baby" as original art. He later lost the suit and paid Queen millions. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is I support BMI in every way, when it comes to Pink Talking Fish whose name grows by the dollar. That is theft and borderline creepy. After bankruptcy, I suggest they write original material or go back to being The Phix.

Wanee booked The Jamband Holy Trinity
Wanee initial Line-Up is Wonderful its why I set my soul to awake in Spring. 
Wanee is about the closet to a sure thing in this ever sucking, shrinking Festival climate. I try and cover the magic of Suwanee every spring. It starts festival season off in such a seductive way. There lineup is always well thought-out and planned according, so you have a chance playing chose your own adventure and not missing THE set. This year Stevie Wonder would hear the same quality music as anybody's planned day.They always book the perfect formula but it's like they got a raise in band budget or shipped at Walmart. They booked the Jamband Holy Trinity as the headliners. The late bloomer Bob Weir with a stage full of musicians and a Kimock. They are booked as Bob Weir and the campfire boys sealing the title of stupid band names. Widespread Panic and Trey Anastasio. Let's not sleep on a possible spontaneous combustion if you miss that moment. ........... This just in: The official Wanee website has taken down the 2017 lineup posted and will officially be announced on December 5. They have the decals and poster That actually can only be a a few things and nothing as to do with an act playing. I bet they leaked on purpose: Usually it's something so trivial like Trey's contract says I get to announce my Tour first. I will have basically the same announcement in 5 days. Here is the line up a week early.

Hang Out Festival is officially sell out festival In other news Frank Ocean is alive
Hang-out Music and Cops Festival just released another Shit Line-Up 
I recall when Hang Out was the best Festival in the country by far. Headliners one year was Tom Petty, Paul Simon and fucking the Red Hot Chilipeppers. This year Frank Ocean is on top. Profits will sore! I literally covered Hang-out, Waka, Bonnaroo and Summercamp in one month. Hang-out was far and away the best. Enter VH1 and in two years in went from paradise to a Strip mail on a beach. The once heady festival is now Sell-out Music festival. New motto is come for the music and stay until you can afford bond. If this line up excites you then go to another Jam Band site and read the commercial. I don't care if a publicist gets mad. Well, I do because they treat the press great. Now they will need to hope we show up. Plus, I hate Sand, but dancing to Sand on Sand made it less annoying when it was in my ass all month.

Reed Mathis’ new passion project “Electric Beethoven” is nothing short of brilliant. This past Tuesday night I was fortunate enough to witness their modernistic approach to arguably some of the best music ever created. Reed’s concept is simple in design and execution. He surrounds himself with some of the most talented musicians in the jamband scene and uses Beethoven’s classical catalog of music as their compass to jam.
It's basically jazz with classical interpretation as the hook. The music can and does take off in unforeseen directions but Beethoven's melodies can always be relied on as the connection. On this particular evening they improvised mainly off Beethoven's Third and Sixth symphonies. This incarnation included Todd Stoops on keys and he was joined by “The Motet” ivory player Joey Porter for an extended jam. The beast that is Jay Lane was working magic behind a small kit most of the night but sit-ins would descend upon the drums often over the course of the almost three hour set. Reed Mathis filled out the band with guitar prodigy Clay Welch. His laid back approach on guitar suited the music well and he was assertive when the vibe needed it.
I would guess if Ludwig Van was alive today he would enjoy how this outfit is expressing his music a hell of a lot more than a symphony repeating it back to them note for note. Like most geniuses, he was a real live wire in his day and his brilliant music should be available to every musical fan, not just the ones in suits. I recommend you run and see this band in any incarnation if the opportunity arises. It is far too stupefying and outside the box to make much money. But on a Tuesday night at the Fox Theatre, we all danced to Beethoven's timeless music and witnessed nothing short of a bravura performance. The only smiles bigger than the crowds on this night came from the musicians themselves. I streamed about 20 minutes of the show. As we reported last night Leslie Mendelson sat in with Bob Weir Friday evening. What I did not realize until I read Jambase that Aaron Dessner finally got to play in the band and sat in on guitar as well. Practically the entire show! They were literally five guitarist at times.
