Wouldn't it be great if every time we looked at our phones it was all music and rainbows? We here at Team UM wanted to pop in and wish you well this weekend, and offer our gratitude for continuing to inspire us to do what we do. As a token of our thanks for being the best fans in the biz, enjoy this complementary download of "Der Bluten Kat > Final Word > Der Bluten Kat" from our New Haven, Connecticut show on Thursday. Being a man down is a rare occurrence for us but we appreciate Joshua Redman stepping in to slay it. In addition, how about an unreleased video of "All In Time" from our 2016 Halloween run in St. Louis? You're awesome. Keep that shit up.

Umphrey's McGee rolled into the State Theatre in Portland for a much anticipated show still a man down. Jake Cinninger is still in unable to perform while he suffers from a "Wicked Flue". The band was joined by saxophone prodigy Joshua Redman once again. The second set was scheduled for the improvisation set. 

Spafford continue on its mission of taking over the world one show at a time with an impressive opening set. Catch this band immediately! 

 

  Umphrey's first half was intense considering everyone was anticipating the second set. Joshua Redman sat in on practically the entire first set as well. They opened the eventful show with "2^2" and played an interesting first set. They are a very different band without Jake (obviously), but I enjoy it on many levels. U.M.'s stunning second stanza was a little over an hour of complete improvisation. I just listened to the complete second set and enjoyed it immensely. They would sound like Pink Floyd only for the groove to dissolve before reinventing itself Zappa-esque. The vocal portions of " Jimmy Stewarts" are epic. The show ended with an encore of "Much Obliged" into "Ophelia" by the band. Listen to the show yourself thanks to Jambase and Taper opsopcopolis.

  Jake Cinninger must have dined with Bob Weir because he has a "wicked flu" and U.M. reported yesterday he would be out indefinitely. His absence unfortunately will include the impending improvisation set with Jason Redman. Unlike fans stuck in Mexico, where it was a no brainier to continue the Dead scheduled show with Jackie Greene filling in. This however is a different situation entirely with some fans expressing negative  feelings on how Umphrey's McGee handled Jake's illness. They would have preferred to postpone a few shows, especially the highly anticipated improve show until Jake was feeling better. Well thanks to Jambase you can watch a few songs from last night's show and make up your own mind. Joshua Redman sat in last night and will again be with the band tonight for the all improvisation set. How did Brandan Bayliss sound as the only guitarist? I personally find it interesting but I was not planning on attending any of the effected shows. Personally, I can sympathize with all parties involved but at the end of the day...... The show must go on! Umphrey's McGee honored Butch Trucks by performing"Jessica" and also mixed up the setlist to keep things interesting. I know those in attendance had no arguments during the dub version of "Breathe". Tonight will be some shit!

Umphrey's McGee will play an entire set of improvisational music with Joshua Redman

Umphrey's McGee added another show where they will play an entire set of improvisational music with Joshua Redman. 

 

        Umphrey's McGee will play on January 27th with saxophone prodigy Joshua Redman and will perform an entire set together without a net. The "From the hip" show will take place at the State Theatre in Portland, Me. Almost a year ago exactly to the upcoming date U.M. played an entire set without a setlist or anything planned out ahead of time, also with Joshua Redman to great ends. The show was a huge success and they repeated the no script formula for a quarter of UMBOWL 2016 and it was well received. We need more of true improvisation in music today.
