Today is the anniversary of the third night of the Egypt trip. This is the show that David Lemioux pulled most of the "Rockin' the Cradle" collection from.
9-16-78 in Egypt at the Giza Light & Sound Theater
The cd set is a collection of the last two nights. Dave used two tracks from the 15th and put an excellent "Estimated Prophet" and a couple other tracks on the bonus discs. The majority of the three-night run was from this day. So we are gonna provide you a complete look at night three of this historical cultural exchange. Also, this was the night of the lunar eclipse which made this night even stranger for the normal bedouin. They being the natural denizens of the desert, had to be a little weirded out by these strange, hairy Americans' with the giant pupils and the loud music. The stereotypical ugly Americans? "Things are gonna get stranger, so let's get on with the show, let's go!"
The show and setlist for the final pyramid show will be at the bottom. They played one of the handful of versions of "Sunrise" during the lunar eclipse. Keep an ear out for the second "Shakedown Street" ever played. It's absolutely fire. There are also great versions of "Candyman", "Row Jimmy", and "Stella Blue".
Enjoy the show. And just like the band's whole career, these were magical nights full of coincidences and synchronicities and even though the shows weren't the best, they kept up the tradition of blowing the big gigs. I don't know if this counts though. This was their own thing, but they were counting on selling the shows to make up the money for the trip and that didn't work out. So maybe all the goals weren't met. Still, Phil was on fire and the rest of the band isn't too shabby. Jerry is in good shape and Mickey is having a blast. They aren't as bad as people make them out to be. All three are in circulation so make your own minds up.
