    J-RAD is the first band in my opinion that do not deserve the burden of Greatful Dead tribute band anywhere near their description. In Port Chester, New York at The Capital Theatre last night they added some more tunes that fall under the term"almost". Besides playing a Beatle and Ween song for the first time they had guests join them none more stunning that vocalist Alecia Chakour rendition of "Two Souls in a Communion".  Thanks to Jambase we have full audio and videos from nugs.net

Joe Russo announces his NYE dates for Almost Dead

Almost Dead announces their dates and location for New Year's Eve Festivities.  

Almost Dead is playing a night at the Brooklyn Bowl on December 29th and finishing off the year at the Capitol Theater in December on the 30 and 31st.

Joe Russo's project is one of the best Dead cover bands out there with Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, Tom Hamilton and Dave Dreiwitz, so check them out. You can do plenty worse in New York than seeing one of the best bands touring.

G-Nome Project, Tweed, and In Flux Rock American Beauty 7/30/16: NY,NY review and setlist by: Mike Geller

Location, location, location is a motto of real estate, but in this case it applied to the venue as well.  It is a great thing to have a killer show two blocks away from home.  For those who don't live as close, American Beauty is located in the heart of NYC just 2 blocks from MSG/Penn Station, near multiple subway lines and easy for most to get to.  The room is small and intimate with a few unique touches like caged raised viewing platforms and good sound from almost anywhere. It is a perfect place for a small show.

Tweed started off the night with a bang. I first discovered them at Great North Festival last year and they left an impression.  They continued to justify it with a funky, bluesy set highlighted by the crowd request "Couch".  They classify themselves as "Jamchronica" which I feel is appropriate.  The blend of sound from the 4 members fills the room and makes everyone get up and dance. Tweed consists of AJ DiBiase on guitar and vocals, Joe Vela on drums, Jon Tomzak on synthesizers and vocals, and Dan McDonald on Bass and Vocals.  Be sure to check them out either at Great North, or Luna Light festivals or their many upcoming tour dates which can be found at

G-Nome Project was next for 2 incredible sets.  They very recently changed guitarists adding Shlomo Langer to the mix.  Many bands when changing out a member go through a transition phase, not the case here.  The first time I saw them also was at Great North last year , and I saw them again a few months ago both with the original guitarist, and with Shlomo they didn't miss a beat.  If you had your eyes closed for all of those shows you wouldn't even realize a change was made. 

They are one of the tightest bands I have ever experienced.  They also come at you full speed ahead with no letup at all.  If you are looking for a fast upbeat set without any slowing down these are your guys. The downside is that you must stay hydrated as they go long and hard in their shows leaving nobody disappointed.  They have been described as "grilled cheese funk" while I think of them as "prog rock jam" but they still have the funk element, as well as the element of surprise in their sets.  You never know when you will get covers of well know jam bands like the Disco Biscuits, or a remix from the Sesame Street theme like we got last Saturday night. This unpredictability plus a large arsenal of songs allows them to play 3 sets at a festival without any repeats or the crowd getting tired of them.

They are based in Israel and they are currently touring the US with stops at Great North, Catskill Chill and other spots which can be found at http://www.g-nomeproject.net/.  Their members are Eyal Solomon on Keys, Zechariah Reich on bass, Chemy Soibelman on drums, and Shlomo Langer on guitar.  I hope you all join me at Chill for their set!

In Flux Finished the night.  Unfortunately my old body gave out and I wasn't able to stay on my feet long enough to catch the set but I have heard and seen them before and they are another great set to see when they come around. Bob Weir to join the festivities for the 40th Anniversary of the Band's Last Waltz 

Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Rick Danko, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson,Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm with Garth Hudson in the back.

Nearing the 50th anniversary of the Band's final show it's time to start milking that cow. It certainly helps that it's hands down one of the finest concert documentaries ever made, and was directed by Martin Scorsese. Also, being a Bill Graham production, it was going to be special.

After a slew of Last Waltz commemorations in different cities and with different lineups over the years, this one is scheduled to be held for free in New York at Damrosch Park on Sat. Aug 6th. That's not much planning time for those elsewhere in the country if you were on the fence but if you live in the NY tri-state area, a free show, including Bob Weir is a can't miss opportunity.

 

While this lineup doesn't even touch the original held at Winterland, where Bill Graham arranged a Thanksgiving dinner for all in attendance, this lineup is no slouch either. Under the direction of long time Dylan guitarist Larry Campbell, the artists include Levon Helm's longtime Midnight Ramble Band and will be joined on the bill by such names as  Dr. John, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Anderson East, Howard Johnson. Dr. John and Howard Johnson were both at the original Last Waltz. These events are going on all around the country and look forward to one in your area. The original was on November 25, 1976.  Although, The Band would go on to perform without Robbie Robertson in the early 90's. That incarnation of the Band never reclaimed creative spark that they  had from backing Bob Dylan from 65 through his years at Woodstock and the amazing Basement Tapes, to their incredible performance at the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen with the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band. That show, held on July 28,1973 is almost as famous for the soundcheck as for the show. It once even held the Guinness Book of World Records title of "Largest Audience at a Pop Festival". After the amazing, Music From Big Pink, the Band went on to record several more great albums and joined Bob Dylan on the "Before the Flood" tour which was the fastest concert sellout in history at one time.In so many words, The Band was an amazingly talented group and the artists paying them tribute have some big shoes to fill, trying to slide into The Last Waltz's Shaq-sized shoes.

Just for kicks, if you love the Band and The Last Waltz, give a listen to Rock of Ages. It's not as popular because there isn't an award-winning film attached to it but it is an amazing live album at any rate.
