Denmark Street Guitars has announced the sale of an original 1958 Gibson Explorer for 1.1 million dollars.
The London-based store and Reverb issues a press release claiming this price is the largest transaction ever for a non-artist-affiliated guitar.
The London-based store never possessed the instrument as they basically played middle man on this holy grail of electric guitars. Gibson only made 19 Explorers in 1958, with the body built from korina and still having the PAK humbucker pickups intact were all factors in driving the price up. Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Rick Nielson of Cheap Trick are both owners of korina Gibson guitars.
Robert Johnson (Frayser Flash) is a storied musician and one of the largest music memorabilia collectors today and he was not surprised by the news. When I reached out to him for his thoughts. he said "Vintage Guitars are not only the best investment today they are safer than gold". Mr. Johnson went on to say that "the sky's the limit" when dealing with classic instruments.
