The Saturday morning Wake & Bake Show has two options this weekend. 

 

 JRAD's complete show from Hulaween for the flower.  But if your dabbed out, than crawl back in bed and enjoy "Cirles Around The Sun". Both were risky approaches to the Soundtrack of our souls. But both bands are as brilliant as they are different. JRAD is Dead on Steriods and "Circles around the Sun" is more like the Dead on Peyote. 

      If you feel like a few dabs and don't want to waste the special Saturday morning buzz and feel like a less busy but still a mind melt than I recommended you watch this "Circles Around The Sun" show.

    That is the first set from last night's show which kicked off a three-night Colorado run. However it will be one of their last theatre runs. It was nuts to butts last night, sold out with no fire marshal, packed! Plus, the 200$ price tag they demanded on the open market only proves my point. The Fillmore is in the near future for this magical vessel of Dead dreams to another land.  They don't even have complete control of this ride. Hell, we refuse to let them retire from a band that was meant to be a one and done tribute. But one can't put toothpaste back in the tube and it's all over the fucking sink. They have reinvigorated the GD catalogue of music to the point I listen to JRAD bootlegs nightly, but with the same passion as the wide-eyed child I was when I first chased this rabbit to china. I mean listen to this "Eleven" & Terrapin From last night.

   JRAD is the future! It's akin to GD on steroids. It's what no other tribute band had the balls, chops or vision to pull off.  They play Dead covers like the Dead played Dylan covers. Their own way! Ironically, by not playing the songbook like The Grateful Dead did, they captured that elusive magic that makes it feel so right. 

If you still doubt it was not to be I leave with this: Even if you scramble up the GD something good comes out.

Joe Russo and the gang bang out another great show. This band is on fire and one of the best in the business right now.  

The best nights are usually the ones that you never planned on! Typical of all the things that tend towards the serendipity around all things Dead related, I connected with a friend for the first time in ages on Thursday. My friend told me I need to grab a room in Boston and a ticket to see Joe Russo's Almost Dead,for the first time. "You will not be sorry". Friday night in Kenmore Square is a little flashback to Dead and Co. last July. Plus, there was the fresh excitement that we will be together again now that the new tour dates have been announced. Just like every show, friends are meeting in line that have arranged their weekend together around this show and the rest of the run. But everyone is ready to rock out this night.

"The Music Never Stopped" gets the night off and running and gets everyone dancing and pumping up the room's energy. They dip straight into "China Cat Sunflower", and as a first timer, I see immediately while the whole catalog may be familiar, the sets and the songs will be weaved together and it's a whole new game. "Touch of Grey" is tight and everybody wants to believe, "we will get by" and "we will survive". "Black-Throated Wind" takes us into a mellower zone. Scott Metzger is all in on this one. Rolling straight into a "Jack Straw" that melts around us, "Reuben and Cherise" comes out of seemingly nowhere. Not that anyone is complaining! When they close the second set with "I Know you Rider" I realize why it didn't follow China Cat in the Grateful Dead fashion. It's because it was always there, waiting to be belted out as the set closer. 

At halftime, everyone is all smiles and takes care of any immediate business but the crowd energy stays high and everyone is ready to get back on the ride. "Althea" opens it up, no mellow versions tonight, this is a song to get down too. While everyone is still dancing, might as well go into "Good Lovin'" and really shake our bones. Soon, Terrapin comes out, and in my opinion the epic commands the second set. Around 11:30, and a third of the way into the Terrapin Suite, Joe has a solo moment involving his whole kit that I felt is the personification of what he is about and it was a grateful experience to behold and I felt lucky to see it. "Uncle John's Band" was upbeat and fun and led into "He's Gone", which always haunts me, this rendition being no exception. A solid "St. of Circumstance" solidifies all my earlier thoughts. I may be familiar with the songs but JRAD makes the show entirely their own. After a short break the encores begin with the Band classic "Ophelia" which drops right into "Not Fade Away" which is always a great way to end the night but then takes a turn towards "Brown-Eyed Women" and then wraps back around to finish up the "Not Fade Away". A pleasant surprise and amazing gift for me all the way to the end!

  Bob Weir joined Almost Dead last night for an acoustic segment at The Fox Theatre in Oakland. I am sure Scott and Bobby are rehearsing for the Mexico concerts and being ex-bandmates with founder Joe Russo it was just a matter of time before Bobby sat in. They did not invent the acoustic segment just for the Bobby guest appearance, they explored with it recently at the Brooklyn Bowl. Although I wonder if Bobby could have kept up?

Tonight Get Ready for the First Phil & Friends Show of the Festival

Phil and his friends, Page McConnell and Jon Fishman from Phish, and Joe Russo with Anders Osbourne and the Infamous Stringdusters.

  

Tonight marks the first time Jon Fishman joins Phil and Friends and the whole concept of the Interlockin Festival is clearly born out by Phil's shows. The festival was set up to put bands that had interlocking members or bands that played together, et.cetera.  Tonight, we'll see the double drumming that powered the GD through most of their career and will be one of the few times that Phil and Friends has had double drummers behind him so he will have a turbocharged set of another pair of rhythm devils behind him. With Page on keys and The Infamous Stringdusters, I feel a lot of American Beauty/ Workingman's Dead tunes coming. However, Joe Russo's Almost Dead is famous for making song combos that the GD would never have thought to play. JRAD is simply amazing an if you haven't heard them, the STREAM IS FREE. You have no excuse. They might be the best interpreters of the GD oeuvre that has been around after Jerry. I'm really looking forward to tonight's show.
