Dead and Company played the first of a pair of shows Saturday night at historic Alpine Valley. Before it was all over the boys of summer delivered yet another night of pure magic.

The first set got off to an untraditional start but a stellar one none the less with a giant "Cassidy". One could even argue that Bobby was being silly and played the first set backwards. It closed with a smoking "Music Never Stopped". But in between those two first set staples were a bevy of classics, including a fun "I need a Miracle" and a touching "Box of Rain". My highlight of the first set was "Dire Wolf". But the meat and potatoes of this show were in the second half.

"Deal" was a welcomed audible before things got Wier'd as John delivered a passionate version to start the second set. Then, with an adventurous"Eyes of the World" ,the magic switched on and the jams came loose and fast. "Eyes" evaporated into those special guitar licks that signals "St.Stephen" and this rollercoaster visited "The Other One" before this psychedelic musical theatre was over. Dylan's "A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall" returned and worked much better coming out of Space. Then the remaining portion of the set was a dance & sing-along party with the closing "One More Saturday Night" following a heated and missing in action"Help>Slip>Franklin's Tower. The crowd was going nuts and on the anniversary of the last concert the Grateful Dead ever performed I thought for sure a "Black Muddy River" encore was in store but once again this band knew better than us and played a bittersweet "Knocking on Heaven's Door". What a Night! What a Band! Who would of thought 21 years after Jerry Garcia last played with the Grateful Dead, we would be celebrating One More Saturday Night.
