Lotus may have changed the way they reccord on their latest album "Eat the Light" but show no signs of mellowing.

Lotus  may have added vocals on every track on thier latest album "Eat the Light" but show no signs of mellowing. 4.5 out of 5 glowsticks. A must have!

Lotus exploded onto the scene in 1999 as an instrumental jam band out of Indiana. They have released several live albums and a handful of successful studio releases, including their celebrated inaugural effort "NOMAD". But "Eat the Light" ,due to be released July 15th, is a huge step in the brilliant evolution of this band. For the last ten years or so, they have made a solid name for themselves as a group of bravura instrumentalists. Even though their past studio releases have been musical discoveries, they lacked the magic they capture playing live. On a usual night, this gifted band leaves jaws on the floors as their live shows are pure deliciousness. What they achieve live is musical wizardry and "Eat the Light" is easily the first studio album to capture that spark.
Since it is the first album where there are vocals on every track. Lotus was smart and recruited plenty of talent to guest on the record including Johnny Fissinger, Oriel Poole, Steve Yutzy-Burkey and many more. This album would sound just as welcomed at a beach party as it would at a late night set at our favorite festival. It reminds me of carefree summer nights when your biggest problem was your mom finding your stash. The opening track "Fearless" speaks to that innocence as it displays plenty of potential to become a barn burner live while the lyrics entice one to sing along. The whole record is a homerun and any fans that feared the vocals would change the vibe were correct. It improves it tenfold, as it adds another dimension, for these musical geniuses to explore. The musical arrangements are just as complex and exciting as expected but now they just have intelligent lyrics to add another layer. My favorite song on this delight of a release is "Sleep When We Are Dead" it reminds this critic of early Talking Heads while the lyrics are catchy, the listener is still transported by the music as well. It is hard to label this album but it is a marvel in about four different genres. Lotus, with the added vocals or even creating its' first album of songs, will not alienate any longtime fans with "Eat a Light". What is wrong with singing while you're getting your mind blown. I highly recommend this album to any fans of adventurous music. It will be exhilarating to watch these songs
evolve in a live setting, especially with them working so well in the studio. 4.5 out of 5 💊🚬🕯🔦
