Get Your Kicks on the way to "The Backwoods Music Festival" by taking Route 66. Words & Photos Grav Weldon
If you have not made plans for Labor Day weekend and want something a little more memorable than your standard festival trip, I have a proposal for you: TAKE ROUTE 66! The Backwoods venue is located right off of the iconic highway. This road trip is especially epic for those of you than live relatively close to Los Angeles or Chicago, as these cities are the terminus for the historic highway. From the West Coast you can sleep in a “Teepee” at the Wigwam Motel, feed donkeys in the Old West Town of Oatman, AZ, eat at the Midway Cafe, and experience countless other roadside attractions on your way to the Festival.
If you are coming from Chicago, start your trip off right with a plate of pancakes from Lou Mitchell's and then cruise through the Midwest to experience such unique Americana as the Pink Elephant Antique Mall, the second largest rocking chair which is located in Fanning, Missouri and the Rainbow Bridge.
If you live closer to the festival, don't let that deter you from making a Route 66 tour of your festival experience. Either make the festival your starting point or take a different route to one of the terminus points and then make that epic road trip which has been the heart of American road culture for over half a century. You'll be glad you took the trip.
