8 Bit Civilizations Preview - Jaw dropping 8-bit demo remake of the classic CIV but on the C64!

For 25 years we've all been building empires to stand the test of time. Beginning on Amiga and PC in 1991, it's hard to believe we'd ever see the likes of this epic turn based 4X civ building game on anything less than 16 bits and at least a few hundred kilobytes of RAM. Teased early last year, the game has had a significant amount of work done since the early screenshots. Developer

Latest 2016 SEUCK Compo Entry - Border Blast 3 Review

2016 wasn't all bad news and Brexit... Commodore 64 saw some of its finest releases with the likes of Barnsley Badger, Tiger Claw, and The Bear Essentials giving all of us plenty of reasons to fire up our hardware and emulators. And even those without coding experience are able to get involved, as The New Dimension have even been running another Shootemup Construction Kit (SEUCK) competition.

Fire Breath - Lost in the Attic for 26 years finally released for the C64

Software developer Erik J. Hooijmeijer has released an old title he tried to release in 1990 on his alternative software development website: Ctrl-alt-dev. Sitting in his attic for 26 years, this fully playable platform game - inspired by my two favourite games: Bubble Bobble and Creatures - can be downloaded for free from his website, and not one, not two, but three trained versions from The

Chuck Rock - Another C64 Game that Wasn't... Case Closed!

One of my favourite pieces of news to do write ups on are the reports from "Games That Weren't" ... A dedicated investigative news website which delves into the histories of C64 games. Especially ones which were either left unfinished, or mysteriously vanished at some point, usually between magazines' reviews, and actual release day. Last year saw some high profile Hi-Tec and Warner Bros

Thrust 30 - A truly awesome version of Thrust aims for a Greenlight success

Earlier this month we did a big feature of HayesMaker's Thrust remake known as ' Thrust 30 ' for PC, Mac and Linux. It is a 2D vectored game that celebrated the 30th anniversary of Jeremy Smith's "Thrust", which puts you in control of a fast moving ship that could blast away defences, take out power stations and tractor orbs from deep underground and out into space. Well you'll be pleased to

Yogi 3 - Yog's Big Clean Up - Cleaned and released for C64 after more than 20 years

Games That Weren't have completed the hatrick of Ash & Dave cartoon licences which were scrapped or lost in the early 1990s. Yogi's Big Clean Up has been recovered and completed and is available now at Games That Weren't. The game was victim to Hi-Tec Software's demise as 8 bit software houses either transitioned to 16 bit computers and consoles or fell by the wayside. Incomplete and

Wizard's Dominion - Lost early C64 RPG gets new release [ Update ]

Wizards Dominion was a popular graphic adventure written for the first 16 bit home computer the Texas Instruments TI 99/4A in 1982, and ported to C64 in 1983. Until now you'd only find the Texas version to download online, but thanks to Genesis Project the game has been rescued and is available now on CSDB.

The game is a Pseudo 3D isometric turn based RPG. Explore the caves to find the

Shotgun Xmas Edition - Get into the holiday spirit with a 4-Player Death match!

Nothing quite says Christmas like a good party game, and when it comes to video games: Multiplayer death match.. Whether it was Quake 3, Call of Duty, or Bomberman 64, blowing up friends is probably the pinnacle of pure joy. Dr. Wuro industries celebrates the festive season this year with a X-mas themed version of their recent multiplayer hit: Shotgun for the Commodore 64.

Jail Break - Genre defining Konami shooter fixed for C64s

"Run and gun" games would come a long way in the year or two following the Arcade release of Jail Break by Konami. They would eventually perfect the format 1 year later with the release of Contra in the arcades, and 2 years later saw William's electronics release the excellent Narc, which caught controversy over it's "realistic" digitised sprites and ultra violent theme. However back in

Goblin Towers - Classic 1980s C64 Text Adventure Release

Text Adventures were many of our first forays into video gaming. Similar to the Adventure stories we would get as books each adventure was usually a unique, and fulfilling story combined with puzzles, traps, loot, and enemies. The latest Genesis Project release on csdb is one such classic adventure game: "Goblin Towers" by Supersoft It features the game's cover art, some hints, a map and

Donkey Kong + (X2016 Version) - Jumpman is back on the C64!

C64 owners are now even more spoilt for choice when it comes to their favourite home computer port of the arcade classic Donkey Kong.  As another faithful conversion has landed, and within one day, cracked and trained by the speedy crackers at Genesis Project.  Fans of the game will not be disappointed, as it's as close to the arcade original as we've seen on the platform.

Bugs Bunny Private Eye Preview - Hayesmaker takes a look at the latest Onslaught C64 release

It was one of the best stories on the C64 in recent times: Daffy Duck, Hi-Tec software's highly rated Warner Brothers' licence, but never to be released game, was found, on some working disks thought to be lost forever. During the search, however, also discovered, was probably the only copy in existence of the full game of Bugs Bunny - Private Eye. This got a release on "Games that Weren't

Reset 4kb Coding Competition Causes Avalanche of Mini Games to Hit C64

Back in May Reset Magazine announced their "Crap Game Compo 2016": The only constraints would be the devs' imaginations, and of course the tiny 4kb file size. Now the competition has closed, we can play all the games which made it on time, and try to pick our favorites.  Amongst the best is "Goblin", by Pond Software. Simple platforming action, where you must collect all the items, avoid the

Demons of Dex - Brand new roguelike released on the C64

Remember those first days at work? When you were asked to go and get a left handed hammer from the hardware store, or asked to use a computer where they've turned the background picture into a screenshot of the desktop... Well think yourself lucky you didn't go to Druid college, like poor Eino here, applying for the role of Arch Druid in Demons of Dex. A brand new roguelike dungeon crawler

The Sea Voyagers &D - Explore the New World on your old C64 computer

Inspired by an Ebay find, MadMax of Mad Hacker's Incorporated teamed up with Hokuto Force for a new release of The Sea Voyagers (1984). This release adds the game's manual, and comes with a photo of the keyboard overlay, which you'll need to play the game. This is a mainly text based interactive history lesson, don't expect any arcade thrills or pirating glory. But if you've got any interest

Maze of the Mummy - A new C64 Game is available from Psytronik Software!

This week sees the release of a brand new C64 puzzle game from Psytronik Software and Magic Cap. Maze of the Mummy is available now on two different disk formats. It looks like an overhead puzzle game where you take turns to try to either escape the maze, or get caught by the chasing Mummy. The game boasts 255 levels, and some rather nice looking graphics. All orders come with a digital

Lucius Demake - Commodore 64 inspired retro badness (REVIEW)

You read about it here first. Shiver Games - developers of the demonic child simulator series "Lucius" - have recreated their original story, using the pixel ratio and colour palette of the most popular computer of all time: The Commodore 64. We don't cover too many PC games here, but the recreation is so faithful to the Commodore's graphical style, that we thought we'd give you a review.

R.I.S.K. - Alien busting action on the C64 with a worthy crack!

I wasn't going to mention the game everyone's talking about... Hostile Alien environments, many varied enemies attacking in swarms, negotiating the planet's surfaces with your blaster equipped skimmer. While trying to determine friend from foe. But if "No Man's Sky" had been released in 1987, it might have looked a bit like this...This is R.I.S.K: Rapid Intercept Seek and Kil.

The game's
